Available potential (physical, technically achievable and economically expedient) of solar energy development in Ukraine

The potential of solar energy in Ukraine is quite high for a wide introduction of both, the heat energy and PV equipment almost on the entire territory (see Fig.1). An annual technically achievable solar energy potential in Ukraine is equivalent to 6 mln. t of c.f.; its use allows saving approx. 5 bln. m3 of natural gas. An average annual amount of the total solar radiation which accesses 1 km2 of the surface on the territory of Ukraine is within 1070 kWh/m2 in the northern part of Ukraine up to 1400 kWh/m2 inn the south of Ukraine and higher in the AR Crimea. The period of effective operation of the helioenergy equipment in the southern regions of Ukraine is 7 months (from April to October), in the northern regions – 5 months (May to September). In the climatic-meteorological conditions of Ukraine for the solar heat supply it is effective to apply flat solar collectors that use both the direct and dispersed solar radiation. The concentrating solar collectors can be quite effective only in the southern regions of Ukraine.
